I'm trying to figure out why this coin was graded AU55. I've compared photos of halves from the same year, graded lower than this coin. The hair below the cap seems rubbed out more than what I've seen, as well as the wear on the button on liberty's neck.

Also, the eagle's feathers don't look well defined around the edges.

My 2011 RedBook says AU-50 requires "Trace of wear on hair over eye and over ear". Surely this coin shows more wear than that?

It sure is a great looking coin...though it looks like the buyer paid way over book value! Thoughts?

Its probably a strike issue; weak strikes often need to be graded differently because they may fail the ANA detail requirements but still have little wear. I still probably wouldnt call it AU-55 though, it may have gotten a break because of the crazy toning.

I don't see any indications of a weak strike, it's a nice looking coin that I would gave a grade od AU-53.

* Drooling * that coin is gorgeous! But I do agree that it's not an AU-55 - it looks lower AU. Then again, I don't really blame the buyer for paying what they did given the overall look.

I wonder if this coin would get a star grade if crossed to pcgs/ngc. I'm guessing the buyer took a chance with the high bid.
Thanks for your feedback, I think I'm getting the hang of bust halves.
Rest in Peace

Sometimes its not a weak strike per se also...I guess sometimes it's just the striking 'characteristics' because there are AU coins with MUCH more detail than this. Confusing stuff sometimes.

I'm not crazy about the look of this one-my guess in a PCGS holder it gets an AU-50.

Beautiful coin I won't fault ANACS for that AU-55 rating seems reasonable
