I have the chance to buy a few rolls of 1949-S dimes for around $190 a pop. The rolls have not been searched so an average grading cannot be obtained. What are your thoughts? Should I run for the hills or buy as many as I can afford?

$190 is too steep, I would go for them at $120, which I think is a bit under spot.

I'd pass on this one if you are in it purely for the silver content.

I was in it because I thought 1949s was a key date but I'm nervous because I'm not sure of the grades. Thanks for the input everyone.

if you do buy any i'd only get 1 at first. if they are all average circulated I think it would not be a great deal. if there were some nice ms coins in there then it might be a good deal. without seeing the coins we can assume the worst...

Yes, the 1949-S Roosy is the key date of the series but it is really nothing special below AU. The 1949-S is plentiful enough in MS grades that few collectors seek out circulated examples so you may have a hard time liquidating dozens of them.

See if you can get them for melt or slightly below melt.

I don't think you will get them below melt or even at melt because it is a key date. Right now a roll at melt is around 135. So at best you are looking at probably around 140. This also sounds to good to be true, 1949 S dimes sell for 30 bucks each if they are MS 62 or higher (atleast at the coin show I went to recently and the flea market that has a couple coin dealers) I don't see someone selling you an unsearched roll of those coins for 190 when if you get one or two of the coins to grade MS 62 or higher you have already made your money back in those 2 coins and the silver value of the rest of them.
