I'm very cranky to see most of my newer one cent Canadians have developed black spots (moisture?) and stainings. Or maybe I'm just noticing that with a loupe now? I tucked them all aside in little bags for a while and pulled them out to go through for a couple of the packages I'm making.

I think I'm going to forget hanging onto any post 1996's unless special somehow and focus on pre-1997.

Do you folks find the post 1996 coins to not keep well? Just wondering! Thanks.

They keep fine if kept in a dry environment. I keep sachets of desiccant bags in with coins I seriously don't want to get moisture damaged.

Putting coins in zip locks just ensures any marked change in temperature can result in condensation. Water or spittle drops hitting untoned copper ensures you are going to get spot toning or corrosion depending on the water chemistry. You can use zip locks for packaged coins, but ensure it's dry in there with desiccant bags.

When I am asked this question by friends I tell them all teh same thing. Buy cheap desiccant bags and put a layer of them in the bottom of a cheap cooler with a tight fitting lid. Put any coins you are serious about keeping in 2x2's and store them. They will stay unchanged for decades.

My coolers are actually old steel coolers because plastic wasn't used much when I started collecting. Same effect though.

Expect to pay around 5 dollars for fifty one gram desiccant sachets. An example may be seen by looking at ebay item number 200460227833 (I don't know or endorse the seller or the product, it's just an example).

Thanks a lot for all the info and suggestions.

I guess I'll try that desiccant bags idea when I get a chance. No local dealers of coins or coins supplies in this town. At least I haven't found any yet. So will have to find this stuff online and be able to use PP to shop.

Meanwhile, I think I'll end up giving almost all my newer coins back to the bank and starting fresh Will put good coins in flips right away from now on! It'll be fun having new coins rolls to check though as I haven't been able to roll search much at all lately. Am very antsy, doing without my hits

Older coins hold up better here!

Thanks Ugly, I too am in the same boat as Dottir, a lot of the new coins are very disheartening, and trying to keep them in good shape is a challange.
