I'm considering picking up a high grade three-cent piece. Looking at RedBook they appear to be a steal for the amount minted.

1: Are the low published mintage misleading?

2: Why are they so cheap (relatively speaking)?

3: Why on certain years are proofs (PF-63) cheaper than Mint State?

hey I often wonder that my self as I try to collect 3 cent nickel and silver and Two Cent Pieces I believe they arew ay under valued . And because they are odd is why I think most people don't collect them , which is the vary reason I do collect them. I think the quanities minted are realistic but truley do not show the rarity I believe becuase there are not many around. Also keep an Eye out for the double dies on the series as Longacre seems to have quite a few on his pieces

1.The RedBook numbers are suppose to be accurate.

2.They are not a popular coin with collectors it takes a certain amount of demand to drive the prices up.

3.The proofs were issued for collectors only so they should be in easier to find in high grades. The coins issued for circulation will be harder to come by in the higher mint states because they were meant to be used to make purchases.

I hope this helps a little.

I am glad to hear that you are considering 3CN, one of my favorites. I agree with DeWayne76 on the circulation prices. So many of these coins were the for the "people's business" meaning that they were meant for everyday use. Finding a higher grade is pretty hard! Just don't start buying too many and drive up the prices, I still need a few of the key dates to compete my set!
