It's a replica of a Spanish gold piece. Or rather, a replica of a Spanish silver cob coin, in gold. The lions-and-castles reverse was not used together with the shield obverse on gold coins.

Sap: I have seen these in a postal auction. If the example illustrated here is from the same source, the auction description says that they are in 9 ct. gold.

Found on a beach? There does not appear to be any sand abrasion on this one.

mjoe: The examples I saw illustrated in the auction catalogue appear to have been for a set of four: 8, 4, 2 and 1 reales, but in 9ct gold. The estimate was not too much above the bullion value, but it was suggested that they would be a cheap way of representing these coins in your collection.

The auction was about 3 years ago, so estimate prices would not have much relevence to current prices.

It was minted in Mexico City. At least it is a copy of a coin minted there.
