I have a complete set of 11 PCGS War Silver Jefferson ... figure I should show them here for us to practice grading.

Sooo ... try your expert opinions at this one.

The coin is slabbed in a PCGS problem free holder ... all input welcome.

I say up front that you will be surprised by the answer.

Enjoy the die crack on the obverse through Jefferson head ... a common problem with these hard-worked WWII dies.

Sooo ... PCGS grade please?

David

This one is hard because I think the pics are misleading it towards a lower grade, but I think it's a MS-66

Pleasing original surfaces. Sharply defined strike for metal composition. MS67-5FS.

If the grader had an argument with his wife the night before he gave it a MS-64 for the die-deterioration. If he didn't, he gave it a MS-65. If he got lucky, he gave it a MS-66. Do I understand market grading, or what?

I, personally, can see it in a MS-66 set. That's also a nice little crack trying to come in upper-right (3:00ish) on the building.

A real beauty with nice steps (and clean fields) MS66
Some of the brillance fading might bring her down to MS 65 though.

Yes eddiespin I believe you do.

That nails it indeed Bizybackson.

This is the PCGS Top-Population 1945-D War Silver ... 68 graded at this level and zero finer.

I have a very difficult time grading coins at this level of preservation ... suppose I need to subscribe to the eddiespin theory.

More War Silver Jefferson to come along shortly ....

No way I'd give that more than 4 steps in soft alloy, plus the bad mix of the alloy should count off. If I put a grade on it, I'd be at 63, 64 with an arm twist. The problem I have with slobbing is the 9x difference between 63 and 67, not to mention the 37.5x difference between 67 and 68.

Sigh I guess we were pretty close. Takes guts to go beyond MS-65/MS-66 based on a photo of a toned coin very tough to assess luster.
