picked up 1883 GSA coin yesterday. in good shape as far as bag bumps and scratches are concerned. reverse is shiny and nearly flawless. but 40% of the obverse including all of lady's face and neck, and the open space on left side of coin-----have an orange/copperish tint. not a rainbow. not particularly reflective or luminous. just ugly.

I realize toning can take a number of forms. but haven't seen this coloration before.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear the container had been breached, and some kind of contaminent is the culprit.

anyone?

Can you post pictures of the coin. That would help a lot.

Toning is a process, not a one-stop deal. As toning ages, it progresses through the whole rainbow of colors. Generally that happens progressively from the rim inwards, which is where we see the "rainbow" effect. If you look at a rainbow-toned Morgan, you should see the color you're describing near the innermost (most recent) of the rainbow - it sounds like the earliest toning color. Morgans don't always tone in rainbow fashion; your coin is not necessarily artificially-toned although your mention of the involvement of the face and neck isn't encouraging.

Yeah, images would help.
