I attended my first coin show today in Auburn, MA and after browsing the 45 tables knew I had to add this guy to my collection...an AU 1896 Japanese Yen. There really weren't that many people offering large silver dollars/crowns except for Morgans and Peace dollars of course!

Nice looking coin. How do you identify the date? I just picked one up in a lot the other day and have no idea how to date it.

Thanks,

It uses Japanese numerals.

Yours is the equivalent of Year 2 10 3, which becomes 23. I couldn't tell you the era, though.

Perfect! Using the characters that you point out it is a Meiji Period 1890. Much appreciated.

Crownman- Do you know much about the Chinese Provincial silver dollars? I'm looking for help identifying one I have posted here.

Thanks,

The era is Meiji. The only year this design was used in any other era was year 3 (Taisho era).
