Hello all!

I have the opportunity to purchase another $3 gold! IF it is good, this one looks pretty well MS to me, but then again I'm no professional. However, there is something about the surfaces that... concerns me...

Are my concerns reasonable? What to the more experienced collectors think?

Another-$3-Gold!

Thanks all!

Well, before we get to your coin, let me tell that the one and only time I had my rear end completely KICKED on a coin purchase was with a counterfeit 1855 $3 gold piece. That was a $500+ mistake on my part. I'm no expert on these, but I look at raw $3 pieces with a very critical eye.

The good news is that I don't see any of the tool marks, irregular denticals etc. that my counterfeit piece had on this example(though I'm not sure about that mark below the wreath on the reverse coming out of the denticles). I also don't see any markers that would compare this one to one of the ones out of the Bill Fivaz Counterfeit Detection guide. My main concern is that the devices look just slightly bumpy. It may be ok, but For that alone, I would insist that the owner send it out to be certified before purchasing, since this is easily a multi-thousand dollar coin if genuine. It does look MS.

Nice looking coin, and good luck!

not sure if it helps any to see another example.

If you're buying from a reputable source, have return privileges, and the price is right then go for it. It looks MS from here.

looks like a marked up MS-61
but I would use caution with gold
unless it's professional graded

$800 and I can get a refund if it isn't authentic, and it will go to PCGS the minute it gets to my door.

Do I go for it?

I think I'd be looking under rocks for money to snag that deal ($3 gold is my favorite but I only have a VF 1856-S). One comparison:

Not 100% sure it's MS by that comparison, but $800 with the buy clauses you mentioned, I'd go for it.
