Found an odd 2003 P dime today. There isn't any reeding at all. The edge looks almost rounded. The face and obverse of the coin appears to be AU. The coin looks as if it is slightly thicker than other dimes. This variation in thickness is most obvious when it is sandwiched between two normal dimes. I've seen coins with the reeding worn away or almost worn away. However this coin appears to have never had any reeding. I'm not sure if that is possible or not. Is reeding added after a coin is stamped or is it part of the die?

I can post pics later tonight if anyone feels it is necessary to determine what is going on with this dime. Let me know.

Cheers

Sounds like a Dryer Coin.

Without pics I would say Dryer Coin too. Post pics of obverse and reverse and edge would help a lot so you will know for sure what it is.

There you have it. Seems like a good enough explaination as any. I've found a few other curious dimes as well. A cashier at the gas station had this little plastic bag of coins and I inquired about it. "Oh, thats just ten dollars in dimes a customer brought in this morning". I'll take that in change please. No silver though...

It also sounds like a Dryer Coin to me but pics would be nice The reeding is applied to the coin at the time of striking by the collar. If a coin is struck out of collar, it will have no reeding but it will also be larger than normal(broadstruck).

Yep, a coin will get stuck in the fin of a commercial clothes dryer and be beaten unmercifully against the steel drum until the dryer is serviced and cleaned.
