I wish I had some coins this old. Just the thought that these are almost 300 years old, who held these coins back then? What sort of journey did they go though before they ended up in your collection. The history is so intriguing and I wish there was a way to dig up their story. Loving this thread.

Quote: Is this thread done? I have more coins to post; waiting for 1702.... It better not stall here.. I have a few more from this century to show, starting with 1710, and my 17th c. stuff is mostly large coins.

Fortunately, the photogenic side of my 1719 Denmark skilling shows the date nice and clearly.

That another nice coin Sap! How does the other side look like? Now's the time when it's going to be really interesting! Unfortunately I'm out until we reach 1548, and it seems like that's gonna take a while..

Cool! Thanks Ngdawa. I didn't know much about this coin, but now I know a little more.

Your coin is an emergency coin which was handed out on January 6th 1718. There are about 10 different types which all have different names (like yours; "Flink och Färdig" means "Swift and Ready"), none of the coins have the king's name nor "Sverige" (Sweden) written on them. A few more coins was planned but never released.
The other types of the emergency coins are: Kronan (The Crown), 1715 Publica Fide (Public Trust), 1716 Wett och Wapen (Sense and Weapon), 1717 Flink och Färdig (Swift and Ready), 1718 Ivpiter, 1718 (there are also a type spelled "Ivpitlr") Satvrnvs (Saturn), 1718 Phoebus, 1718 Mars, 1718 Mercvrivs (Mercury), 1718 Hoppet (The Hope), 1719
The coins were withdrawn in 1 June 1719. In 18 Feb 1724 all coins were overstruck with 1 Ã-rKM (like my coin)!

Sorry, end-of-the-month is always a bit frantic for me. While on the topic of 1718 Swedish nödmynt, here are my two examples: But, moving on to 1717, and back to Dutch duits. This one's from Friesland province. It's not too pretty, but the date's legible.

In view of the general slowness of this thread, I am going to backtrack a slight bit to show another of those 1718 'fardig' dalers I just picked up along with a remarkable accumulation of mostly 19th but a few 18th century miscellaneous non-USA coins. This one required digging no farther than the bottom of the small auction box where it rested probably since 1939, which was the last date-of-acquisition on the storage envelopes. Without the previous posts for reference, I would not have had much of a clue how to identify this coin. Which brings up the next item I am ready to post when the time arrives: a mysterious 1713 copper of about the same size which you amazingly knowledgeable folks will *soon* have the opportunity to properly identify.
