Sorry guys and gals, let me clarify. I see all sorts of 2010-S dimes on ebay...some for just above the melt value of a silver dime. Good deal, right? Well, if it's a clad dime...maybe not as much of a good deal as you thought. What if the seller doesn't specify if it's clad or not...does the photo show if it's silver? Some may think that ALL San Francisco mint mark proofs are silver...well, are they? If they aren't how can one tell based on a photo?

(For the record, some of us don't have the option of buying coins "in hand." I don't get to the states all that often.)

I understand. I was only admitting my bias and not trying to say it was a better way to do it. I apologize if I implied otherwise.

You cannot.

In my opinion, if someone is deliberately not mentioning that they are clad, they are also deliberately preventing the coin from showing it. That is, there are no shots of the edge and the colour balance is set to show more white than gray.

As I said in this case you are at the mercy of the seller to tell you if its silver or clad, there is no way to tell by a photo

jbuck, no hurt feelings here! Thanks anyways. :)

If I had the option, I'd pop in coins stores and flea markets all day long...alas, I'm happy to scrounge up an out of circulation peso of decent caliber every now and then.

jbuck & bryan, Thanks for clearing that up. That means all the "just above melt" proofs are from sellers that are probably hoping to sucker someone into thinking it's silver, when it's not. Good information!
