Hello, this is only my second post.
Finally organized all my Canadian coins and have begun coin roll hunting for all my missing years and varieties...but, I don't have a single 50 cent coin.
I tried going to my local bank to get some or even a roll...they looked at me like I was from another planet.
Any recommendations for banks in Toronto that would carry 50 cent pieces...or am I out of luck?

50c rolls? Good luck.. if you ever find a bank that has em, guard the info about their location like a state secret.
You will eventually find a teller that has a few.. just visit a few banks in your area and ask. I ask pretty much every time I'm at a bank if they have old bills or coins. 95% of the time, the answer is nope..

First of all You'll love this forum. Unless someone turns in halves to the bank,I would say you're out of luck. The last circulated half was in 2002.The only other option would be to buy off someone.

Some banks might have some stock from time to time as customers bring them in, but the fifty cent piece was declared "no longer circulating" after a failed attempt to renew interest in 2002. This means they are returned for melt of the nickel content when turned in to banks as far as I know. I have been buying rolls of every year from 68 in order to make sure I have a supply later on.

In the Toronto area, you are merely hours within a coin show every weekend. Have you had much luck at shows? Usually you can get circulated coins from dealers junk bins at, or slightly above, face value. This weekend is the Brampton coin show.

Thanks everyone for the tips! This forum has been great.
I'll start asking around at banks...waiting for that lucky day and I'll start hunting at coin shows. What is the best source for coin shows in the Toronto area?

The Canadian Coin News Website has a list of the upcoming shows at http://www.trajan.ca/showbbs/ccn.plthe one in Brampton attracts a fair number of dealers. As stated in a previous update, Nickel 50Cents are relatively cheap.... The Silver ones (1967 and prior) are over $10.00 just for the Bullion value.

There is a good coin show on this Saturday in Brampton. I believe the address is 340 Vodden St.

If all that fails, you can start collecting your 50 cent coins on ebay

Have you tried Colonial Acres Coins. When the wife and I took 9 weeks and drove across Canada with our 5th wheel, we stopped at Colonial Acres Coins and of course, the Winnipeg mint. Didn't get to Ottawa Mint. Try Colonial to see if they will sell 50 cent coins separatly.

I'll bring some 50-cent rolls to the Brampton coin show tomorrow, spread them around....

I asked a teller if she had an 50c pieces on hand...she said "No, but I have 20 old Canadian dollar coins". Picked those up at face value...not bad for beginner week 3 of coin hunting!
