Obverse - Traces of wear in hair from forehead to ear, edges of leaves, and the cheek and neck areas. Scratches and minor gouges on face and neck. Mint luster in field, and recessed areas of image; however, it appears, under magnification, to be somewhat dull and grainy.
Reverse - Traces of wear on all high points, scratches and minor gouges, mint luster equal to that described for the obverse.
As a result of the above description, I graded it an EF-45. How close do y'all think I came in my grading? If you disagree, please indicate your reason(s) for your differing opinion. Thanks.

Ralph

Looks AU 53 or 55 to me!

Some breast feather detail and the remaining luster make this coin better than EF IMO.

I think 50-53. On the reverse, I like the amount of detail left on the breast, neck, top edge of the wings, claws, and larger leaves.

On the obverse, the cotton bolls are almost all there, and all the leaves and hair details have me wondering about strike quality as opposed to wear.

That, to me, makes it an AU coin.

Now that's what I'm talking about! I appreciate it when y'all critique the coin, and point out where I may have gone wrong in my estimation - helps me to learn. Thanks alot.

This is a two-way street. Putting my thoughts down for your coins lets me evaluate myself as a grader - it's one thing to look at a coin and say, "Yeah, this one's a 45," and quite another to describe the specific reasons why I think so. I generally grade from the overall look rather than scrutinizing details; 9.5 times out of 10 my final studied grade agrees with my snap impression.

I know exactly what you're talking about Dave. Some years back I taught an adult education-no credit course in leathercraft at San Diego City College, and I found that teaching is one of the best ways to learn. When you're teaching, or helping, someone else with less knowledge than you, you better your own knowledge.
I have guess-timated the grade on my coins, but I will continue to post coins here, and will look forward to the feedback concerning them. I'm satisfied that I have some of them right, but others.....
Thanks.
