I am near finishing a MS64+ Franklin halve set, and I would like to know which company is 'better'. I know they are both respected, but does either one give better grades? Which holder is better (looks and quality)? And which is more affordable for 36 (including one error) coins? I know that NGC is 100 bucks to join, and then 12.50 for moderns, but only half of the set is considered modern (1955+). I also know that there are tiers of membership at PCGS, but what does it cost to submit coins once you are a member? Thanks! Edited by madhandles761991 10/17/2006 9:16 pm

So you want to buy raw coins and have them graded? You can look on ebay and see what past auctions have sold for regarding the two TPG's. It seems like PCGS slabs sell for a little higher premium, but that can also change at any time. Although the TPG companies have standardized the grading of coins, it is still subjective to a certain extent. And, sometimes (so the rumor goes), the TPG's will downgrade certain coins in order to keep the higher grade populations lower to keep values higher. But, I think it's only a rumor and not proven. But I'm sure there are members on this board who can address this issue better than I can.

You can submit to NGC without a club membership if you are a member of the ANA ($36/year)

And if you're a YN, it's $20 a year. I'm not sure if ANR is still doing this, but I got my ANA membership "matched" by ANR and I got a two year membership for $20. This lets me submit to NGC like everyone else. I've heard that for franklins, NGC is the way to go since PCGS is a little lax with them.

Its $20/year to join the ANA? Where do I do this, and what is ANR? I am a young collector (15). I can send directly to NGC without a membership if I belong to the ANA?

NGC is tougher on the FBL designation than PCGS is.

For what it's worth, I've seen a number of NGC and PCGS graded Franklins and have found that the NGC graded ones have often toned very unattractively. These are coins that have been graded MS65 that I wouldn't be willing to pay 63 money for. PCGS coins seem to retain their original surfaces better. Perhaps the holders are more airtight.
