Dear All, My name is Tom I don't have any knowledge about collectible US coin but my dad would like me to sell this coin for him. I am not sure where to start and how to figure out the out the price of this coin. I have included some pictures below. I heard the coin can be graded, is this one worth sending out for grading? What grade do you think this would be? Please advise Thanks in advance.

There's about $183 of gold in there based on a $1512 spot price. I think my gold grading skills leave a lot to be desired, but it does shows signs of wear and perhaps of a cleaning, so I'll guess AU details? It is about the 5th highest mintage for that series, so it's a common date. With that, I'd say it's a bullion item and not a candidate for grading. There's one on ebay now at $244 with a few hours to go. ebay completed listings are in the $220-$250 range over the last few weeks. I'd say $225-$275, but please wait for other opinions since I've been known to be way off. And welcome. Great pictures.

The coin has been harshly cleaned, you can see numerous fine scratches covering the coin on both sides. That cleaning basically renders the value at gold spot prices.

Someone worked that one over with a grinder. But still good as gold.

Yes agree with the grinder. Gold content only. I apologise, first . I know we were a little terse. Sadly someone improperly cleaned that coin.

I still think you can get over melt for it in a private transaction. I'm not seeing any quarter eagles for $183 anywhere. Wish I did. If you were allowed to sell it here and listed it for $199, I bet it would sell in a heartbeat. Tell dad $200 to set expectations. Throw it on Craigslist for $250 and see what happens. It seems pretty well established that grading would be money down the drain. Good luck. Let us know how it plays out.

All the little hairlines screams worked over or whizzed. As others have said, $200 is a realistic figure, and I might even be a buyer at that price.
