I have seen Vatican souvenir medallions made in the 1950's and early 1960's that were of a similar style and quality to this one. These were typically not silver, but rather silver gilding on white metal alloy.
Your medal has a number 750/?. I cannot make out the second portion, but the 750 leads me to believe it was gold plated at one time. the number 750 is the European mark for 18kt gold and the the number afterward indicates what it is plated on.

Well 750/000 is indeed a common European 18kt gold stamp. It's unusual that this would be stamped on a plated item without a silver purity to go along with it. I suppose it can also be a silver purity mark, but 750 silver is highly unusual for a medal or medallion, which are typically .900 to 1.000. I guess the best thing to do is have it tested.

Guess it is from Spain. The two persons depicted will be Ferdinand and Isabella. The fact that the year 1492, in Roman numerals, appears on either side could mean that, on the side with the Catholic Monarchs, the date refers to the end of the reconquista in that year while on the other side it refers to Columbus reaching America. Here is somebody who wants €50 for his piece ...
