Could someone explain the SMS coins, and perhaps put some examples up.

SMS coins are from mint sets, which are prepared differently than normal circulation strikes. I'll try to put up some images later.

SMS were also issued between 1966-1967. They were intended to replace Proof sets, which had been discontinued by the US Mint in an effort to stop coin hoarding. In 1968, The Mint resumed the issuing of Proofs.
I have also seen the new satin finish mint sets that the mint started to make in 2005 referred to as SMS also. The coins in the mint sets were treated with special dies (If I remember correctly, glass beads to smooth them out.) giving them a smoother finish than regular business strikes.

I was asking because this 1960-D Lincoln looks almost cameo, the higher raised lincoln head, and the lettering. But I guess it is just in really good shape.

...to correct a previous (probably typo) the 1960's SMS's were issued 1965-1967 and I believe they were minted in San Francisco with no mintmark. No SMS;s in 1960, your cent is just possibly an early strike off a new die. Dare I use the term "early strike"
