The thing is, doesn't paypal hold your money if you're a new seller?

$39 is almost melt price. I guess this might fool the naive, but they won't be for long.

I dont' understand people. People who purchase these "coins" deserve whatever they get. He requires immediate cleared payment, enough said. Just people being greedy.

The thing is, doesn't paypal hold your money if you're a new seller....Yes, they hold the money for 21 days or if it receives positive feedback, but if there are issues going on it could take longer. Don't forget paypal is going to get their pinch of money (like 2%) and ebay takes 10% right off the top so you see where this is going.

OK - newbie question. Other than the language of the seller, and the very low price, how can one tell it is fake from the photo?

Hey drdave - I wish I could help answer your question, but the item is no longer on ebay. I was going to have a look and see if any of the usual giveaways were present... =)

Normally, if it's a good knock-off, the best way to tell is to weigh it - however the counterfeiters are getting better and that's no longer such an easy tell-tale.

Sometimes the surfaces appear "grainy", and that is a result of an old method called the "sand-cast".

Other times, things like the denticles near the rim are a giveaway, and sometimes there are subtle differences in the fonts (things like serifs missing, et cetera). Sometimes dates are misplaced (a mm too high, or one number too low).

Unfortunately, this is a big-money game and the counterfeits are getting VERY good.

It's normally a safe bet to buy coins graded by ANACS, NGC, or PCGS - but now even the slabs - right down the the holograms - are being well-replicated.

It's almost to the point that there is no 100% way to be sure, BUT if you buy a graded coin from a well-known, reputable seller, the chances are you're getting a solid coin. And that doesn't mean reputable on ebay with good feedback - that means well known amongst the coin collecting community. Look for things like ANA Lifetime memberships, CAC memberships, et cetera.

OF COURSE - that doesn't mean those are the only reputable sellers. But, if you're just learning your way around and you want to buy on ebay, that's a pretty safe way to start. =)

While every one else was busy complaining, I took 57 seconds to report them and they were gone in 44 minutes.

I am sure that is a photo of a genuine 1882CC but that is NOT what you would get for $40, no one sells dozens of genuine CC Morgans for that price. If you got anything at all, it would more than likely be a poor quality Asian counterfeit.

Thanks for reporting these listings to us. I understand how counterfeit coins on the site is a concern. I investigated these listings and confirmed that they have been ended and removed from the site and the seller suspended.

Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.

Sincerely,

Judith

How'd you manage to get a personalized response?! I never hear back, and often people continue selling their items...

The trick is how you report the violation. Using the link is scubu's signature line is the most efficient method. I have also received similar personal responses that have resulted in auctions being taken down in less than an hour.
