It looks (and sounds) like a Franklin Mint medal to me; the little speck just below the cat's chin might be the Franklin Mint mintmark - which resembles a letter F with a flattened M through the middle of it. Check both sides and see if you can find this mark on it anywhere, and see if there's anything inscribed around the medal's edge.

Franklin Mint medals often have "hallmarks" or other inscriptions stamped onto the side around the edge, indicating year, composition and series. Does yours?

"Sterling" = .925 fine silver.

The thing that looks like a copyright symbol is indeed a copyright symbol.

"77" is the year, 1977. "P" is for proof.

Alas, there's no series number, but with the 1977 date it will help narrow down the search.
