This variety really ranges in price in G4, listing as $200 in J&M, $275 in trends, $300 in Charlton, and $425 on CoinsandCanada.com. I was wondering if anyone knew what the long term trend of this variety has been. Seems to have fallen out of favour with collectors. I've bought 7 of these on ebay, recently, from G to VF...trying to get a sense for the scarcity of this issue. Does anyone else think this is an undervalued sleeper?

Hello! I personally feel this coin is a sleeper, however, the demand on this coin is usually from the more hardcore "variety" half collectors. The price on this coin starts high at low grades making the more presentable "looking" pieces unattainable to most collectors. I got rid of my G-4 (A/V) a few years ago. I'm currently looking for a VF or better, since I got bored at looking at a worn out G-4. The ultimate find would be to buy a nice raw EF-40 from an unsuspecting U.S. dealer who is not aware of this "secret" variety. I'm sure that's how you found most of your pieces? Glenn

I believe it's an over valued sleeper. May be a case of grade rarity, Lower grades sell frequently on ebay attributed or not Trends does not consider raw coins or ebay sales in their price setting

"lower grades sell frequently on ebay"...not true....over the last month, I'm the only one buying... and no new ones have been listed since...:)... sometimes...just because there are 4-5 items listed on ebay...there is a perceived "availability"...but if a coin is scarce, and you take those 4-5 items away, suddenly its impossible to buy. Its what I did with the 1875 quarters :)...bought 3 of them...and now you cant' buy an undamaged one under $3000 LOL...;)

isn't over valued and sleeper mutually exclusive?

DBM...surely their value has risen though? The 1875 quarters I grabbed were 50-60% off trends... I'm not buying every 1872 50c A/V in sight...but when its being offered at G4 for $150, with trends at $300...I wont say no :)... now I'd love to grab some unsuspected 25c 1872 A/Vs...the problem is that 95% of the 1872 quarters on ebay have such poor pictures, there's no way to tell :)...

I agree with a few of the other collectors... 1872 A/V halves in AG-3 or Good aren't difficult to find at all, and can often be obtained at a discount
... however, in EF+ or better these coins are extremely hard to find, and are easily worth their trends value

Their value hasn't risen thats why you're able to buy them @ 50-60% discount The 1893 you posted in another thread here IMO is not overvalued, that's a good purchase.
