I posted this on another forum with no answers so I'll try it here.
1. Is the post office receipt enough to get you off the hook in case a buyer says he didn't receive the item?
2. Is delivery confirmation all you need ?
3. Has anyone been victimized by the "I didn't get the item " scam artists?
I know insurance is the best back up but for smaller priced items it can be expensive.

With the following answers, I'm assuming the buyer paid with PayPal.

1. No. You need proof of delivery, not proof of mailing.

2. If the item is less than $250, then yes, Delivery Confirmation is sufficient. If it is over $250, then you'll need Signature Confirmation.

3. I've had several attempts, and I've been through the PayPal dispute process a number of times, but in each case I've had proof of delivery (Delivery Confirmation or Signature Confirmation). PayPal will freeze the funds while the case is being investigated, but the funds will be returned if the case is found in your favor.

What is the circumstances of your case?

Rest in Peace

thanks cwb8539 for the response. I've had no problem with deliveries over the past 8 years on ebay. I have read about others that have had nightmares. One time with an item that was delivered late, I had to show the buyer the P.O. receipt.
Once the item is mailed, it's fate is out of your hands. How can you be held accountable for non delivery?

numismo,I believe it is law that you are responsible for delivery of an item. As cwb pointed out, proof of delivery would be sufficient.I insure everything because I am responsible and I really see no other alternative. If you choose not to insure, then you are in effect,"self insured".

I understand your feelings but as the seller you are responsible. Delivery Confirmation suffices for items under $250 and Signature Confirmation is required from $250 on up.

If you have a tracking number, what does it show?

I don't know what the ebay and paypal rules are but here's a good story.

After a recent purchase I waited 5 days, checked the USPS tracking number, and their website said delivered, on a Friday. It was not. I didn't know if it was delivered to the wrong box, or the postman kept it. It did not come Saturday and on Sunday I contacted the seller. He also stated it had been delivered as I assured him it was not delivered to me.

It finally came on Monday, 4 days after the date the USPS said delivered.. Just goes to show you the USPS delivery confirmation is not accurate.

There is a big problem with the USPS right now. I'm having problems just getting my Coin World delivered. Many problems occur on the shipping docks. Wouldn't be surprised if it's gang related. Use another delivery service and explain the problems and why the increased fees.

ebay will side with you with the delivery confirmation or signature. But with delivery confirmation mistakes happen. mail could be taken out of your mailbox or if you have a communtiy type put in the wrong box. Town houses apt come to mind.

I had a issue with a buyer a few weeks back. He said item wasn't delivered PO DC said it was. With out INS the USPS told me only recourse was to open a theft case. I ended up sending another item to him with signature confirmation. I could of just told him so sorry not my fault. Then watch my top rated seller rating take a 1 star hit across the board. The item was vauled at $30.00 but this is the first time this has happened out of a couple hundred sales. I might of gotten played but I don't think so.

The person that delivers my mail on Saturday scans all the packages when she loads the truck. I had an instance where DC said the package was delivered and it wasn't delivered to me. Fortunately it wasn't an expensive item and the seller sent me a replacement.

Twice I've had UPS deliver packages to some house about 3 blocks away with the same house number on a different street.

I hate UPS, they don't deliver on Sat, they are the most expensive, they damage the boxes more than any other shipper and the drivers apparently don't know what street they are on half the time despite modern GPS technology. Why do businesses still use them?

I've never had a problem with Fedex or USPS.

Well Fedex just delivered me a package that was suppose to go to a guy about 3 blocks away (same house number but different street). I guess I can't say I've never had a problem with Fedex anymore. How can these guys not know what street they are on?

I've had tons of issues with USPS tracking over the years. With as many phone calls I've made to find out a packages location, they always tell me that the online tracking is NOT a tracking system and that USPS is not required to scan any packages location. So my question to them is, why even have it?

Delivery confirmation is just that. Do not go by the online tracking.

If you want accurate package tracking use Fedex. Costs more but they check you package at each point so you know where it is.

Just read up a few and can say I have had no trouble with Fedex. But with more and more packages being delivered I guess anything is possible. Especially if streets have similar names ie lane/circle/drive.
