My daughter is almost 8. For the last couple years she helped me sort pennies, and we'll probably get back to that too in the near future. It helps me stay focused when I try to teach someone the hobby. She will probably inherit the collection someday so I'm trying to get her to appreciate it. In any case, it is a good father/daughter thing to do.

My son will inherit my collection someday also, but hopefully not for a long time.  My son had registered as DanNickelCollector. |

I really like the Jefferson nickels. I am trying to build a collection out of circulation rolls basically in the common coins, and try to find the best condition ones I can for each year and mint mark. I find it exciting to find pre 1960 coinage. I am also looking for error coins. It's fun to look through rolls of coins, because you never know what you will find. |

I believe that I have at least one complete roll of Jefferson nickels in Proof condition for 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964. Is there any value to these? By Proof, I mean Proof, some toned Blue and some toned bronze. |

I'm building mountain of pre 64 nicks. At some point I am going to have to do something about them, but its a daunting task. I just completed a 63-94 folder and I am OCD so I am always trying to upgrade a coin so it takes forever. I am trying to get one coin of each year with some step detail- much harder than you might imagine. I do see that rolls of coins from the 50's and earlier sell for a premium on ebay. |

@Freedom-are you sure you do not mean MS condition? Proof is not a condition it is the way the coins were minted.

I fill whitman albums with them just to sit on the bookshelf. Sounds dumb probably but they are quite the conversation piece.

I have just started collecting nickels. Are there any variety in collecting them other then the 1939 DDR. I found 1 and that's when I started collecting. I can't find any real info on varieties or doubled dies. Please help. Also found a 1978 d that is a doubled die obverse. |

Hello... Been off the forum due to family health issues and the related problems. I, too, collect Jefferson nickels,dating back to 1961 in 6th grade, Have five separate books; four from circulation (plus BUs of recent mintage) and my master book - all BU and all proofs, from 1938 to date, including the 1994 and 1997 Ps (need to get the 97 and the 30s). It's my favorite coin and I still buy five rolls at a time at the local bank to sort and place missing coins. Keep checking all your change - those silvers show up once in a blue moon but it's great when you find one. Enjoy the process - the feeling stays with you even 50 years later. I speak from experience with that one. |

JonNickelCollector: That's a really great idea. You won't see generally as many of the earlier dates (1939-1955) as you did in the 1990s but hey its worth the work. A lot of dealers like myself don't really like to mess with say 1940-1955 unless they are AU or better cause under those grades many of those dates aren't worth more than $2.00 or even $1.00 and that's a bunch of work to flip those coins and then photograph them if you are selling online like I do. One thing you might try if you go to a coin show is find a dealer that has a lot of modern U.S. By that I mean the coins with the late presidents on them. A lot of dealers that do any sort of volume in this stuff will buy full sets or partial sets and they might be willing to sell you a partial set. For example lets just say the dealer bought a Jefferson set that had 50 coins in it and 10 of those were BU. He really bought the set for those 10 coins and he might be more than willing to unload those 40 circulated ones if you are willing to buy the whole thing.

Nice, I have a BU set of Jeffs, plus all the others I can't part with. Careful searching on-line, dealers and auctions can pay off nicely. I got a roll of 39-D's at an auction for $6. Good luck.
