This is probably common, but I haven't been able to find any thing about this coin. What do you IKE collectors think of this? The jeweler, I bouhgt this from, tested the coin and said he thought the IKE is 90% silver. Does this coin exist?

Find out what a clad Ike weighs and what a silver Ike weighs. Then weigh it. It looks like some copper showing on the reeded edge though.

Weight is not definitive as the tolerances have a slight overlap. It is virtually impossible for it to be 90% silver since those planchets had not been used for almost 40 years at that time. However, the outer silver clad layers are 80% silver so a guesstimate test could confuse 80% and 90%. How did the jeweler perform the silver test?

There are some independent mints making silver eisenhower copies, I'm not sure about the purity. The other day there was a post about a particularly convincing 'fake'. Quite a catch if you had one.

Weight doesn't help much. Red Book has IKE silver at 24.59 grams; copper-nickel at 22.68 grams. This coin weighs 23.6 grams. 90% silver Morgans and Peace weigh 26.73 grams. This coin shows slight wear. I don't think enough wear to loose a whole gram of weight. Hope this helps. Larry

It's a D mint - doesn't that pretty much rule it out as a 40%er?

40% Ike is 379.5 grains +/-14.0 and the CuNi clad Ike is 350.0 grains +/-15.2.

biokemist6 the silver test was guesstimated.
jarwulf I saw the 1975 IKE by Daniel Carr. I think it is a beautiful fantasy coin.

Junior e there is Copper in the core. Good eye.
Does that mean it was plated?
Was this much ado about nothing?

Not nessesarily, there are well over a dozen known specimens each of 1977d and 1974d ikes struck in 40% silver. If it is struck in silver it likely is on a 40% planchet rather than a 90% planchet. I personally would be willing to risk the $15 or so and send it of to anacs for verification, but thats up to you. Since there were 40% ikes struck in 72, in theory it is possible that one was struck at the denver mint since they were in other years.

The ANACS census lists one specimen of this issue struck on a foreign planchet, so offmetal strikes are definitively known for this issue. -XoG
