Found a $2 coin today. 1988. It has 4 dots vertically after the year. And on the other side there is a large extra blob near the southern cross, covering 1 of the stars. I will try and get some pics, but am finding it hard to focus on the coin.

Think it's worth anything?

Cheers.

EDIT:

Got some good scans of the coin...

Are the dots raised out of the surface of the coin? Or are they 'dented' into it?

Could be worth a dollar or three.

Can you tell if it is real or "home made"

The dots are raised off the surface. And in my opinion there is no way this could have been 'homemade'. The people I have shown, 2 are collectors, think it is a mint error.

OK well if it is a genuine mint error (they sound like Cuds) it will be worth more than face. I have seen error $2 coins go on ebay for anything from face to $30.

I see, well the blob on the cross looks like a Cud. But the 4 dots after the year look too precise and perfect. Like they where meant to be there or something.

Does your camera have macro mode? If so, set it to that and try again. You'll need to hold the camera about 20-30 cm above the coin. Dont use a flash and light the coin from the side with a lamp or something similar.

It's just a cheapo digicam, I don't think it has macro mode but I will check.

EDIT: Nope, no macro mode. I've got a mate who's gnna try scanning it. I really wanna get a pic up!

Sorry it's taken so long, but I've got the pics!!!!!! Went and bought a flatbed scanner and got the best results I could've hoped for. I will edit my original post and put them in.

anyone else think this may have been a jewelery piece or something where the coin was stuck to another object and that is some sort of solder ?
