I've been "slowly" working through a coin database project and I'm having second thoughts about structure. I think I need to go one more level deep, "Type".

Here's what I have how describing each coin as they are entered. It's fast as the date increments while adding and I can add to the code tables on the fly auto-filling the new item for me.

The Code Tables

The Normalized Coin Table

My thoughts are to change this and build a "type" table as the primary with the following

Country
Denomination
Face Amount
Obverse
Reverse
Strike (biz, proof, satin)
Composition (specific percents of metal)

Questions: In your opinion would this spec a type completely in most cases of modern coinage? How would it match to a 7070? How would commemoratives fit? Would I need a switch for that?

Once this table is complete for a one coin type the second level is year/mint/mintages. This function would be like the first picture except I would simply pick a type then enter a date/mint then auto-run the set. Mintages would have to be hand entered.

The last function is where any user add/edits/deletes their stash.

Database-Project

Any thoughts/ideas on primary structure would be welcome.

Nice screen shots, may be your transaction area but do you have purchase, current value, and sale price as part. Grade, vaietys, details, lots of variables to deal with.I played with writing one myself but got lazy and bought Liberty street Coin Manage and find it pretty compehensive.Check it out if you have'nt, might give you some ideas.

Same here, I was going to do one in access till I found Coin Manager.
It does more then I'll ever need. I actually had downloaded it for ideas for my access front end.
Then I just bought it..

i think that's what a lot of people do, they get started with something but then see that it is a lot of work and then,...

my thought is that it would be great if all this information was hosted so it was portable so that you could access it with something like a smartphone. I would really like all that info to come with me when I go to a coin show or a dealer etc. that would make it unique as the phone apps (do they have one for android?) are not so good yet.

i guess the fundamental question is will it just have your primary collection or will it include all the dupes as well? that would be good for traders I suppose.

That is a nice database. When I did mine, I put in a place for a picture of the actual coin. I have a little more space on my page, because it is a little more basic. I do't deal with coins from other countries, and I just deal with one coin per slot. Meaning, I wouldn't have the line in about the coins for trade.

Everybody has their own idea of what they want for their own database. That is one reason that I created my own, as opposed to going with an online database.

I do have type (Lincoln Wheat, Lincoln Memorial, etc.) in my database. I pretty much use them as defined by the Red Book.

I could send you a copy of my Access database, if needed.

I love the look of your database and would love to get a copy of the template to customize. Would that be possible? I am still debating whether to use Excel (which I know) and biting the bullet and using Access (which I do not know). Any recommendations?
