1975 "no S" Dime

KDMan New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 05/22/2011 6:23 pm I have been reading that this dime is somewhat rare, I'm not sure all of the qualities of the dime I should be looking for, the extent that I know is that it is 1975, no mint mark is on the coin and I was hoping to maybe get some insight from any knowledgeable guru's. I also have 1965, 1970, 1973, 1977, 1978 dimes with no mint mark on them as well. Any info would be most welcome. Thank you. -Kyle- Report this Post to the Staff

Kefiroth Pillar of the Community United States 1431 Posts	Posted 05/22/2011 6:35 pm Those so-called "No-S" dimes are actually Proof dimes that are missing the S mintmark, which all proofs were supposed to have. Yours are simply business strikes minted at Philadelphia, whose coins didn't bear a mintmark until 1980. Report this Post to the Staff
pyrbob Rest in Peace United States 1943 Posts	Posted 05/22/2011 6:38 pm Welcome to the forum! The 1970 no S dime refers to the dime in the proof set for that year. All of the coins in the proof sets have an S mintmark but there were some proof dimes released without the S. Dimes from circulation for the years you mentioned did not have a mintmark when they were minted in Philadelphia. So the dimes from circulation you mentioned are all normal dimes from the Philadelphia mint. Report this Post to the Staff

Kefiroth Pillar of the Community United States 1431 Posts	Posted 05/22/2011 6:44 pm Proof coins have highly reflective mirror-like surfaces, with sharp detail and a sharp rim. You'll know it when you see one. Also, all proofs from 1968-present will have (except in case of error) an "S" Mintmark. EDIT: Also, remember that the San Francisco mint made both proofs AND business strikes for cents 1968-1974 and for nickels 1968-1970.
