To the experts out there:
Are the 1938, 1939, 1946, 1948, 1954 quarters key dates or semi key dates or is there nothing special about them at all?

IMO none of the above are key or semi-key dates
MS64 and lower grades are instantly available no hunting or patience required
Any coin worth only bullion value in VG and being sent for melt daily can't be called key or semi-key

with Ugly, when I was starting to collect in the 60's, a 48 and 54 were the ones to get.

The prices have dropped though and DBM makes a good point. There are plenty around and not enough interest.

Ah, I'd like to add a corrolary to DBM's >Any coin worth only bullion value in VG and being sent for melt daily can't be called key or semi-key<.

It very well may be, as the supply of those dates gets melted and the existing supply shrinks. I grant the market takes time, sometimes a rather long time to react to lower supply, but it does eventually.

After the silver bust of 1980,I convinced myself that all the lower grade silver quarters had been melted.

Thanks guys, this helps. I have been selling off my "extras" for BV and I have a few of the above dates and I wasn't quite sure what to do with them, keep or sell.
I really appreciate your thoughts.

Hello, regards to the dates you mentioned, all are semi-Key's, however they are all difficult or at least challenging to acquire in MS-64 and higher. In time everything comes around, but keep in mind that the Key dates and Higher grade coins (MS-64/65) require a lot more patience than the lower grade, easier, run of the mill stuff!
