Hey all. My mother got this coin while working in a grocery store I believe in the mid 1940's. Someone tried to pass it off as a dollar. She replaced it with a real one and kept the coin. Any help indentifying it would be appreciated!
Bill

It is a thaler from the Archbishopric of Salzburg, a "German State" although since Salzburg is now situated in the country of Austria, it's usually classified as an "Austrian State". In 1640, the prince-archbishop was Paris von Lodron, the gentleman named and depicted on the coin in the bottom pic. The fellow on the top pic is Saint Rupert, first bishop of Salzburg, founder and patron saint of the city.

Assuming it's genuine, this coin was worth a lot more than a dollar, even in the 1940s.

Thanks for the info! Any ideas where to take it to have it authenticated?
