Hey all, brand new here, just made my intro about 30 min ago. Anyway. I recently inhereited a family memeber's collection and he was involved back in the day.

This One coin grabbed my attention because it looks like part of the die broke off or something? The two raised Cud's are 180 degrees apart and the coin only shows 11 stars The right side seemed to eliminate two stars. (the raised portion seems to be part of the coin as well with identicle color.) The date says 1857 and the back is really different, I will post that as well in a follow up. I also have nice close ups I took as well today of the possible errors.

The other coins in the collection are all from around the mid 1850's up to 1870, but I will post them on a different thread. I am mentioning this because They have been in the family for numerous of years and my grandfather and his brother used to be avid coin and stamp collectors since the ealry 1900's.

Many Thanks in advanced for any help and once again, I am glad to be here.

I think the pics of the other side or a close up will help more as for now I think may be it was previously mounted .... we'll see what other members will say

Thanks for quick reply back, I enclosed some more photos, a few of them was with a small magnifying glass with my digital camer on macro. I can submit more if requested. I am just puzzled about this. Also notice the die crack on the star in the "right zoom photo".

I've seen a few of these--it looks like a pin was once soldered to the front for attaching to clothing.
The reverse resembles a "love token"--the coin was filed down and initials of a loved one cut into surface--an interesting example.
Just a guess--others might have more info for you.

It looks like some sort of love token that may have been mounted to wear as a lapel pin.

I've seen these listed as "love tokens" and also "pins" for some fraternal organization lapel pin . in this case the pin on the OBV of the coin as been lost leaving only the solder points left. not Cuds or errors of any kind..still pretty unique..

I realy apreaciate everyone's advice and help and I aggree that it probably was a pin there. When I first saw it, the coin puzzled me and seemd to blend perfectly and I have been studying coins for the past 10 years but I am no expert and learning everyday. Many Thanks again.

I love collecting and will continue to contribute in this forum. I am a huge history buff. (I still did not even touch the old stamp collection yet along with old books).

But thanks again and I will make a new thread for some other coins that I took photos of this morning of the new finds.

Cheers and Happy Memorial Day Everyone!
