Showing my lack of knowledge on world coins here.

I see on the Obv it looks like says 'M Theresia' (mother theresia?)

Not even sure it was currency at one time, maybe just a fantasy coin.

Looks like it dated 1780, but yea.....

The dealer of this coin only buys and sells world coins based on ASW only (+/- 5%). I've made some really great picks there because of this, but I'm not sure if this is even worth picking up. At the ASW I would just go get a Basket Morgan. Not a fan of fakes/fantasies

Thanks guys.

It's a Austrian Thaler proof re-strike. They are relatively common. The orginal strikes from the 1780's are much more valuable. Definately not Mother Teresa.

thank you. It isn't a proof, I actually spent some time looking at it because it looked so good. The edge reminded me of a lot of BU Bust Halves I've seen (the lines around the edge).

Anyway of determining relative value? Or just melt in almost all cases?

It's silver and would trend at bullion value. The re-strikes are considered " Trade dollars" similar to US and UK Trade dollars. Check out this link. http://www.theresia.name/en/

Very cool info! Thanks!

I might just go back and buy it just to try to attribute it and find out when/where it was made.

I have a proof example in my collection. Nice coin. I think it cost me $20.00. That was before silver went nuts.

The Austrian Mint still strikes and sells these (and the 1 and 4 ducat gold coins with Franz Joseph). The current price of a Maria Theresia Taler is between about €28 (unc, loose) and €39 (proof, blister pack) ...
