Be careful who you let see your stuff! This is from our local paper this past week...
Helping Westford woman move, he allegedly carried off $1,500 in coins
Westford, MA -- As a gesture of thanks, Darleen Guertin paid Thomas W. Hickey $20 after he volunteered to help her move from her Westford home. But Westford police allege that Hickey, a 27-year-old Westford man with a lengthy criminal record, also helped himself to something else -- her piggy bank. In Ayer District Court on Wednesday, prosecutor Jonathan Sahrbeck alleged that Hickey, who is on lifetime parole as a Level 2 sex offender, stole a 5-gallon water jug filled with about $1,500 worth of quarters from Guertin's Pond Street home. That would amount to 6,000 quarters. Sahrbeck said Hickey and his wife were caught on security cameras feeding hundreds of dollars worth of coins into Coinstar machines at various stores in Lowell, Tewksbury and Chelmsford. Records indicate there were $1,500 worth of quarters redeemed, Sahrbeck said. None of the money was returned to Guertin. When questioned by police, Hickey identified himself as the man in the photos. His wife told police she was with her husband when he drove to the Pond Street home, went inside and walked out with the 5-gallon jug of quarters

picked the wrong person to help them move. They got real lucky with a level 2 sex offender.
Sad you really can't trust anybody in this world.

I do not understand how someone can steal from someone else...he must have been a government employee at one time.

"None of the money was returned to Guertin". Well, expected, now the lady who was trusting has to take this scum to court to recover her damages, and "prove" that he took it. That sucks worse, she has burden of proof, although I think she has enough evidence. Sadder part is, she's probably going to get a judgement, but never see any of the $$$.

that reminds me of a story.....
my wife and I bought a new washer and dryer from LOWE'S last year. Unfortunately at the time, we didn't have any way of getting it home ourselves so we had to set up a delivery. Well, when the delivery guys got here...they seemed very nice at first. As I showed them to our laundry room, the one guy took his time examining every corner of our house. Then, when they were bringing in the washer, while making their way through our living room....the one guy says to the other, "Don't break that TV man, it would take you two paychecks to replace it." (I thought okay, what's up with this guy)...When they got into the laundry room (which we also use for storage), he couldn't help but keep staring at our fireproof box on one of the top shelves that go around the room. From there on out, every time they were in our laundry room...he KEPT STARING at that box!! I wanted to say something like, "oh yea, that's where we keep our HUGE stash" lol...but I didn't say anything. But I couldn't believe that guy. I mean, he came there to deliver a washer and dryer...and that's all his job asks of him...so he doesn't need to be scoping out everyone's belongings.
Anyway, he would have been disappointed to only find birth certificates, and a few important receipts to things he would have no way of getting :)
Has anyone else ever had an experience like that? I was almost tempted to make a complaint but I didn't.

I'm sort of a believer that those that talk, don't do. Those that say nothing might be the ones to watch our for. Even worse is those that may repeat what you have to someone that tells someone that tells someone. And as the story is repeated, so the value of your belongings increases too. If you have coins, a safe, etc. it is always best to just not let anyone, ever, see them.

Anyone who displays obvious wealth to people who enter the house is asking for trouble. Never wave a lollipop in front of a child; never keep a jar full of quarters in plain sight. Duh.

Unreal, lock him away. It's awful ripping someone off after they compensated you for helping them. (not that it's ever okay to rip someone off)

That sucks. I hope this doesn't sound callous, but this was a completely avoidable situation. I moved recently, and anything that had quick resale potential went into 1 box--moved by me before anyone arrived. Here in town, nobody knows about my collection--that's always been my rule. Only a few collectors I trust know. Quote: From there on out, every time they were in our laundry room...he KEPT STARING at that box! A real big flag this guy is an ex-con, or has substance abuse problems. They tend to forget how to behave normally in society.

With 6,000 quarters in that jug, the lady musta been throwing that change in there for many years (woulda loved to go through those!), and it probably was just a household fixture that she never really thought much about, especially as something of extreme value. Here's this nice young man that helped with the moving, maybe she didn't realize there are people out there that are so stupid they'll risk hard time for $1500; can't believe I said that, as there are people that would bury your whole family for that amount, consequences aside!
