Ok, I'm hooked... I was checking out mint marks and things on my older coins and found the 1945 P nickels and noticed that one was higher than the other. Rare? And I apologize if the quality of the photo isn't good enough to offer an opinion.
Until 1990, the mintmarks on US coins were applied to the dies by hand using a punch. This often resulted in a slight variation in the location of the mintmark on each die. The mintmarks on your coins appear to be within the general tolerance of correct placement. Sometimes a mintmark will be so far off that it touches other lettering, and those will sometimes bring a small premium. Also, since the mintmarks were applied to the die by hand, you can occasionally find repunched mintmarks, where the mintmark was restruck into the die to place it in a better position. Some of the more major repunched mintmarks can be worth a few dollars depending on condition.
Keep looking and have fun! This is a great place to learn!
