Hi .

So I a little bit confused about the S mark on quarters .
I know S stand for San Fransisco mint .
But is that meaning all S quarters are silver ?

I just managed to find a decent 2007 Montana quarter but it desont looks like silver as the rim look from copper .

I also found one 1962 in OK - shape that I know is silver .

What will be my best guidelines to search through quarters
as for the moment I am looking for :

1. mint error
2. older then 1965
3. S mark
4. uncirculated
5. 1969,1982,1983,1986 ( in good shape ) .

Am I missing something on my hit list ?

All S-mintmark quarters from 1968-present are Proofs.

from 1968-1991 proofs were only Cu-Ni clad. From 1992-present, Proofs were struck in both clad and silver.

If this is the case then I have two questions :

1. Why RedBook / numespedia seperate 2007S Montana and 2007S montana silver ?
2. Why the rim looks like copper and are not silver color if it is silver proof .

I thought the same that S means silver but that threw me off

first lets get straight that the "S" is for San Francisco NOT silver that is the US Mint facility that makes all proofs presently and the mint makes 2 types of proofs for the quarters clad and silver when you see copper on the side it is a clad. so you have a Montana clad proof minted at San francisco
now a proof coin is a coin made by the mint with extra care and special minting to give the coin the best finish that can notice the shine in the field and compare that to a normal coin.
handy tip on the left side of the forum there is a glossary it sez a proof is .....

Proof
A coin usually struck from a specially prepared coin die on a specially prepared planchet. Proofs are usually given more than one blow from the dies and are usually struck with presses operating at slower speeds and higher striking pressure. Because of this extra care, Proofs usually exhibit much sharper detail than regular, or business, strikes. PCGS recognizes Proofs (PR) as those struck in 1817 and later. Those coins struck prior to 1817 are recognized as Specimen strikes (SP).

no question is dumb and I am sorry I forgot to say welcome to the family
the kick in the pants is proof coins dont grade w/ the "MS" grades they are graded w/ "PR" and if you pulled the montana from spare change it probly means it is kinda dinged up so it will score lower than most proof coin that have been handled w/ care and kept in the original package

Business strikes (circulation coins) and Proof coins are made with two different processes. No matter what happens to a proof coin it will never be a MS or business strike coin. No matter how nice a MS coin is it will never be a proof.
