One of the locals advertises they buy gold coins. Turned down a 2.5 peso, but "there's not much gold there, anyway."

Another says they buy anything gold or silver. Radio ad has announcer being interrupted by woman "you mean like this single earring?" Yes, etc, etc "this gold tooth?" Eeew, no. Why not? One of my favorite purchases were a former mayor's gold teeth.

Got a call today from a woman. The gold place didn't want to hurt the coins by testing them. OK, what have you got? Well, the one is a gold coin with president Adams, the other has JFK on one side and a two headed eagle, and is silver... Saved her a trip in.

I have over 20 gold coins in my collection. I did not buy them for the gold . I bought them because some coins happen to be made from the stuff. In other words, I have them for their numismatic interest, just like any other coinage metal.

Obviously, the bullion value of a gold coin sometimes has to be considered when making a purchase. Maybe more than half of my gold coins are over 200 years old.

I would love to add some older gold coins soon, say 17 an 1800's. Seems like it is a double edged sword so to speak, as you have gold content on one hand, and the unique old rare factor on the other....

Indeed it is. I only collect bullion, so the numismatic piece of the pie is something that I prefer to leave to others. I can very easily find out what an ounce of silver or gold is worth but knowing what an 1828 golden whiz-bang in extra puff condition is worth can be a lot more tricky.

You need to know quite a bit about coins and their history to be a successful numismatic coin buyer and seller. The bullion coins do not require that. All one needs there is the daily price of the metal in question plus how much premium they are willing to pay. Keeping it simple can be good.

Privately made dollar size. Looks chrome plated, some have the portraits gold plated. $1 retail, if you're lucky.
