If and when the mint notices a die crack like this, is the die destroyed or as long as it doesn't interfere with the mintmark or date, allowed to keep produceing coins?

If and when found, they pull the die immediately and melt any coins produced with the error that are still in the building.

Well, they dont melt them at the Mint- they just run them through "The Waffler"

They are melted down elsewhere
