Hi,

I'm a coin collector in San Antonio. I've collected for over 20 years but have become interested in collecting British in the last ten. From Hammered to modern sovereigns- I like it all. Does anyone have any points or tips for me? Thanks.

I collect UK and other world coins, too, and I'm not sure what to recommend. Maybe go for one of each of the lower-value coins and type coins from the more expensive examples? That's pretty much what I do.

My collection is all British, but covers over 2000 years.

Although it will of course depend upon your budget, I suggest that you might consider starting with just one denomination of coin and see how you progress.

For many centuries, the only coin was the Penny - first silver, then copper, bronze and now copper-plated steel. This would give you a true selection of types and would be a collecting theme that I've never heard of before. Perhaps start from the present and work backwards, at least to start with. Often just one coin per Monarch will suffice, but as you get to know them you will find examples of complete changes in design over a few years.

Good luck in your quest, let us know what you decide.

Bill.

My tip is, get the Equestrian Olympic 50p, without it you cannot have a complete collection. (hehe)

saxtwd: Welcome to the CCF!

See if you can get a copy of:

'Coincraft's 1998 Standard Catalogue of English and UK Coins 1066 to Date'

I know it's a bit out of date, but it is a bit like a Krause telephone book, only with hard covers. It has a wealth of collecting advice for each type of coin.

The only problem with it now, is that the prices are out of date. Not really a worry, current prices can be found elsewhere on the Net.

I would inquire firstly about sourcing this book from an American dealer, or from ebay, (not much problem with fakes here!), then maybe from Brit. dealers.
Spink's or Seaby's in London may help. They have helped me with impossible to obtain references in the past.

Question: Would CCF'ers be able to advise him on references re coins minted before 1066?

Before rushing out and getting an obsolete catalogue, why not discuss the catalogue problem at
