I understand that it brings some "allure/intrigue" to an auction. But other than "estimating" on the exposed coins obverse ONLY, is there any way in hades that such a thing would be on the level? And if not, shouldn't they just ban the practice?
It does titillate to think that behind that mint obv there could be 19 or 49 OTHERS in that state, but such gimmicks really are a stain.
I don't even "trust" that the showing coin isn't a repro or doesn't have a culled reverse or something.
just sayin

You are right to be very skeptical, there has been much discussion on this subject. Do a search and that will keep you busy for a few days.

Until this country wakes up and demands honesty from it's politicians, we have to learn to deal with it in all aspects of life.

I think most people are trying to rip you off somewhat, but I also think a choice few are telling the truth, but their reputation is marred by those who scam with the rolls. I saw probably authentic ancient-looking rolls of 10 Morgans from the Carson City Bank going for $5,000 and up, but these definitely seemed legit to me. Some lucky person saved them and got rich.

I hear ya, I just thought ebay was on the lookout for such things - like banning all but a few TPG from being called "certified". So they would be interested in banning such "rip off" gimmicks to keep their clientele safe - to some extent. I'm not interested in playing "roulette" like this. I agree with you that an amount of "trying to rip off" exists in a lot of arenas. But it doesn't HAVE TO and while you have to protect yourself, the Coin World isn't all thieves.

The only recourse against such nonsense as "unsearched" rolls showing something amazing on the outside, and nothing but crap inside is just neg. Sooner or later the sellers will either wake up and quit the practice, or their feedbacks will be ruined enough that buyers won't take a chance on them anymore.

Honestly, when people say "unsearched" I really dont believe them unless it is at an estate or garage sale. When people say "unsearched wheat pennies" they really arent unsearched...learned that the hard way.

I'm of the opinion that nothing is truly "unsearched",someone rolled them, and a lot of times there is a description of what you will find,ex. inside are coins from 40's,50's,and 60's P and D mintmarks.....lol unsearched my keister
