I went to Numismedia.com just to check on various price listings for Jefferson nickels - as I have begun to dabble in nickel roll searching. Under the collector price guide listings for Jeffersons - I discovered that the 82P, 82D,83P,84P and 86D had listings for 24 cents, 18 cents, 12 cents, 12 cents and 12 cents respectively in G4 - and much higher values in higher grades !

What gives? I thought these dates were just commons. .

Are these just price guide errors - or is there something that makes them worth these prices?

As far as I know there were no uncirculated sets issued in '83, don't know about the other years. Because of this these coins are valuable in really nice condition.

These are sought after in aUNC-BU, and rolls hold 'em. My son routinely
gets around 50. for '82-D rolls, 100. for the P's. Slightly less for the
83's. He just recently started with the 86's.

There were no mint sets issued in 1982 and 1983. Only ones made up by hand and sold at souvenir shops. Thus high grade coins from these years are harder to come by than normal. Thus the higher prices.
Rest in Peace

Thanks for the input guys. I could understand if the price discrepancies were for MS coins - but even Jeffersons in G4 for the dates listed show marked premiums for these common dates.

Doesn't make sense!

That is because the demand for the higher quality coins have made the lower grades go up in turn. There are more people seeking these out even in the lower grades. More demand equals higher price. It is just simple economics.
