It's a British Trade dollar, I believe it was used in Hong Kong / Taiwan in the same manner as our own Trade dollars. I remember seeing a few of these on ebay a week or so back....

...do I win a cookie?

The coin has been properly identified by type.

It is however known to exist in several different counterfeit versions. You should now:

1. It should be weighed - 26.95+ grams is standard. If there is a significant deviation be suspicious of a forgery.

2. Look at the edge of the coin and see if the reeds are uniform in spacing and cross section. Check for split reeds and any evidence of grinding (mechanical abbraison at the transitions from the faces to the edge.

3. Look at the faces of the coin for proof of striking and any die abnormalities that might point to forgery.

4. I all of the above checks out fine - run a Specific Gravity test.

I have one of these. I think it's cool to have "a British dollar coin" as their currency has been pounds for so very long.
