I was looking on ebay at some older educational notes and realized that I have no idea how to spot a fake. Other members in the coin sections of these forums have been helpful at posting fakes and commenting on them, but I haven't seen anything in the paper money section. Is it generally easy to spot the fakes online? I wouldn't think so given the technology that exists today.
What should I be looking for to spot a fake or altered (cleaned or whitened) note when purchasing in person or online. Is there a reference book that is available for such things?
One important thing you can always do is buy from a seller that has a lot of sales, a very high rating, and a return policy. Then if you do get something funny (which you probably won't) you can return it and just be out the shipping.
