I hate to bring up this topic, but does anyone know who's grading more strictly these days?

Some people have talked about ICCS loosening up a bit, but was that only a temporary thing 1-2 years back? Are they back to being super strict?

Does it depend on the coins?

Who would do a better job on Victoria coins?

I think CCCS is the tighter grading company of the two. That doesn't translate to better market value though, it's good when you buy however.

Did you find that to be the case for a large variety of coins, or only for a certain subset (i.e. MS63+, or George nickels, etc)

Well I'll say this about the George nickels, if you buy an MS 63 George nickel in a CCCS holder, it's at least that good and I'd say the odds of a better grade elsewhere are quite high.

I found him reasonable on large cents, Good with Victorian fishscales but I didn't send any Victorian fifty cent pieces there when I was selling, I sent them to ICCS and then flogged them right away before they hit the pop report.

I find CCCS consistent as well as strict. 4 years ago and earlier, I would have said the same thing about ICCS, but no longer.

Hey Danlos, I have some F.Y.I. for ya! On October 22, 2010 @ 22:00 hrs., I was fortunate enough to win a Canada, C.C.C.S., 1870, dime, (hard slab) Narrow "0", MS-63, dime for $556.00 Can. at a Torex on-line auction. The scan of the actual coin really was poor and I did not have high hopes, believing I'd probably be receiving an MS-62 in an MS-63's clothing?
Low and behold, I received the said coin in due time. When viewing the piece, I was glad I was sitting at the edge of my bed, 'cause I was having fainting spells.
It was an absolute drop dead MS-64 (in my Honest opinion) with gorgeous gold/olive toning. I "cracked the coin out" from the hard slab holder, and off to I.C.C.S. it went.
Yes, two weeks later I received the coin from I.C.C.S. and it was given the grade MS-64. Attached was a photo taken by Scott Cornwell stating, "Glen, I thought you might like a snap shot of this beauty".
I feel that Louis Chevalier, owner of C.C.C.S. has to make a name for himself since he is involved with a new T.P.G. Let's not forget "this is the same way" I.C.C.S. got their coveted reputation among Numismatists around the World.
This is the only experience I've had with C.C.C.S. concerning comparing coins to I.C.C.S. I still and most likely always will have a preference for I.C.C.S., simply because they retaing their value among the highest returns of all T.P.G.'s in auctions sales as well as being the most consistent of all T.P.G.'s for Canadian coinage.
Of my 500+ I.C.C.S. graded coins, the only bone I have to pick with 'em is, "why did you under grade 'em so low"?

Glenn,

I spend a lot of time on large cents and I can tell you that ICCS is not the benchmark on AU+ coins. Their standards have severely eroded these past few years. If you are buying the holder then no problem, ICCS sells. If you are actually buying the coin, then you need to be looking at PCGS. They are much stricter on "red", "carbon spots" and "finger prints". IMHO
