Good morning folks,

I can sure use your help. While looking through the Charlton catalogue, I noticed there was several varieties for the 1859 1 cent. With a little research I was able to determine that I had a repunched "5". See pictures below....sorry for the picture quality.

Turning the coin over, I noticed doubling (maybe tripling) of some of the lettering on the obverse.

Can someone explain to me:

1)What exactly is this called.
2)How does it occurs.
3)Is this a die crack in the last picture.
4)Grade of coin. My guess....VF-20

Thanks...Have a great day and a better one tomorrow!

Sorry, can't help until you tell me how you take such nice pictures. It is a die crack.

Thanks my friend. Due to my poor eye sight, I recently purchased a Lighthouse 2MP Digital Microscope/Camera unit to make examining my coins easier. And that it has.....I am very satisfied with the unit. All the pictures were taken with it. Thanks so much for the compliment on the pictures and the information on the die crack. I'm very excited about this coin. I've had it for 40 years or so and never really knew what I had until now.

Thanks again Zonad !

Turns out these Victoria large cents are the Queens of varieties. I am finding tons of them now that I have the Microscope/camera unit. Just finished mowing the lawn and decided to sit down and continue photographing and cataloging my raw coins. Thanks for the help Zonad!

If you look on page 297 of the 2011 Charlton guide you will find this coin. It lists at $100 VF - $200 XF. Nice catch.
