I've been hesitant to post this coin because of the flaw in the neck and thew pitting in the cheek, but, the more I look at the hole in the neck, the more I'm wondering if it's manmade, or the result of a broken obverse die. My reasoning being there are what appear, under 20X magnification, to be die cracks in and around the problem area. Also, the depressed area is not smooth as one would assume it would be had it been struck with a foreign object. There are diagonal, parallel lines across the entire depressed area. Also, there are a few small raised dots scattered around in the area between the hole and the hair which further add to my confusion as to man-made or error. Any opinions on what made this flaw? Now, the pitted cheek. Were it just one or two, I could understand, but with so many, and located only in the facial area makes me wonder what might have caused them. Any of you folks have any idea what the cuase may have been? I'd, also, like to get some opinions on the detail grade, if you wouldn't mind sharing your opinions in that area. I await your replies. Thank you. Ralph Image: 1897 (P) Morgan.jpg98.43 KB Image: 1897(P) Rev.jpg89.71 KB Image: Neck Flaw.jpg9.74 KB

I don't know what happened - when I tried to pull them up, I got a page that said "You've reached this page in error". I'll try to post them again. Ralph Image: 1897 (P).jpg98.42 KB Image: 1897(P) Rev.jpg89.71 KB

Nope Bryan, I posted them again, and it shows that they are part of the message, but when I click on them, I still get the page in error message. Guess it must be childproof - can't figure it out.

The pictures are showing up now, I will let someone else comment on what could cause marks like that, but it still looks like the coin took a hit either from another coin or by something else, but I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time...heck it wouldn't even be the first time today to tell the truth

Yeah - I forgot the photo thing doesn't like parentheses - I reckon it was curiousity more than anything else that prompted me to post the scans - thought it might be from a broken die, or something adhered to the die in that particular position creating a major mint error - wishful thinking!!!!! Detail-wise, it's not a bad looking coin. I logged it into my inventory as "EF-40 with obverse flaws" - probably not worth more than bullion if it's a post mint problem - still haven't figured out the pitting in the facial area. Maybe somebody here has seen the same condition on another coin, and can enlighten me. Ralph

It's very likely the coin got stomped on while face-down on the ground - that would cause the damage you noted, Ralph. I agree with your inventory assessment.
