Any thoughts on this dug coin? On obverse between 1 and 2 o'clock under a 5x loupe I can see the letters DANIA with a last unknown letter, possibly M.

Looks like you have it nikola. Was able to match it using some images found on the internet. Mine is at 1.7g which is probably within tolerance given the amount of wear it has. Comes in at about 17mm.
Thanks so much.

Yepper, Stjoe, that's the one alright. Your little lady survived a lot better n mine did. From what I found on the internet, that was the inaugural year! How did you happen to find her? Mine came up while metal detecting.

Mine's a little bent and chewed up but mostly legible.

When I was a kid, just starting to get interested in coins, my great uncle gave me a handful of foreign and US coins. This was one of them.

A couple more for you, from my collection.

The one on the left appears to be the "second 8 of date over 8 horizontal" version.

Although this "Britannia" groat (4d) was struck in 1836 and 1837 under King William IV, they were for colonial use only. These coins were only made legal tender in Britain from 3rd February 1838.

It is interesting that they are exactly the same diameter as the 3d, but the Britannia 4d has a grained edge and the 3d is plain. The weight differs, the 4d being 29 grains and the 3d 21¾ grains.

Bill.

Back to the original question, here is the 1839 version.

The "Britannia" type was only produced between 1836 and 1855, plus 1888. Another version, with a "Crowned 4" on the reverse was the "Maundy" version and did not normally circulate.
