It's just dirt, I would leave it as it is.

thanks.
its hard to photograph, but the dirt on his face is green and a little distracting.

got the coin in a mixed lot for a good price, so I can't complain- too much.

That black stuff in the lettering may be silver sulphide. It is very difficult to remove without detriment to the coin as a whole. Best left alone.

It MAY be lessened by gently scraping with a sharpened match point, but I seriously doubt it. I have tried and failed with an Indian .925 silver rupee of 1909 in similar circumstances.

My coin is close to mint state, but the black blotching is so bad, that I just threw it in with my junk silver. For me, it was certainly worth the risk, but not so in your case.

If it is just the stuff on the face, you could try carrying it in your pocket for a month or two. The dirt will eventually wear off. Resist the temptation to try to speed up the process by rubbing it. Overall, the appearance is not bad at all, at least in the photos.

Do NOT carry it in your pocket. The spots may be a little distractive but the coloration is perfect and would be ruined by carrying it in your pocket. Acetone might be a possibility and it may dissolve or soften the crud spots and allow for gentle dislodging with a rose thorn. If that doesn't work then I would recommend leaving it alone.
