It's quite common here in Australia for pre-1910 British coins to be found in "worn flat" condition. The colonial mints in Australia only recycled gold coins; all worn-out silver and copper coins would have had to be shipped back to Britain for re-coining. While it was worthwhile for them to ship old silver coins back for re-coining, the coppers weren't worth the trouble - so they simply stayed here and circulated until they were virtually blank.
