Hello,

This is my pure silver proof token. I was wondering what these black spots/stain? Is these PVC damaged? Will an acetone bath remove these? How will it affect the proof-like surface?

Thank you..

The black spots are most likely localized tarnishing that occurred around a chemically active substance on the coin. Acetone might remove the substance that is causing the tarnishing but it will not affect the black spots themselves. That is the result of the metal reacting with something and acetone does not affect metals or their oxides, sulfides etc.

Thanks to your comments Conder101. I have this token for the past 12 years, it's only now that I checked this. I was very surprise to see these black spots. Never had seen this before..

As Conder said. However, as I always mention cautions about Acetone. IF you decide to try Acetone, I suggest you use the Search tab at the top for all the past posts about the usage of that substance. It is highly flamable.

I can't tell for sure from the photos if there is some corrosion on the metal staples. When staples corrode, , since portion of it is within the mylar barrier, over a period of time, the corrosion can move onto the surface of the coin. If you are going to have it out of the 2 x 2, the new staples will help in the next years.

@ just carl and jim, thanks a lot! I have already removed this ti=oken from the 2 x 2. Staple wires has no rust. A month ago, I noticed some sort of mist/precipitation on the inside of the mylar/ It clouded the token,I foolishly pressed the mylar cover to the token. It disappeared. After a month, this is now the condition. Could it be humidity, I can't be sure..

I agree with all the answers/info thus far.

What you likely have is corrosion from improper storage, i.e. exposure to air, excessive humidity, and temperature swings. It won't hurt to try a short soak in acetone just in case there's an off-change the spots are organic. However, corrosion fits the bill better based on the pictures. Chances are the spots will be irremovable without damaging the surfaces. If the coin is important enough to you, an acid-thiourea dip is your only chance IMO. Sorry to say... I think the corrosion has already progressed too far to save the coin.

Also, like Jim said, the corroded staples CAN contibute to the coin corrosion even though they are not in direct contact. What is important for you is that you change your storage method and location. If this started as a perfectly clean proof when you stored it, you know there's a problem. Time to up your game to save your other coins! I'd probably start with a big container of acetone to fully rinse/dry each coin. Then new holders, coin tubes, plastic bags, desiccant packs and some tupperware.

Thanks BAdThad. Tried acetone, no effects. Guess I have to live with this corrosion. I had misplaced and forgotten this token for a couple of years now. It's only recently that I found it. You're right, the place where I found this token was not ideal for coin storage. It was near the windows where there is a direct sunlight exposure.. Could have been due to temperature swings... Again, thanks to all your comments guys, Appreciated it very much.
