So, I have been going through my collection, trying to pick a certain direction and haven't really settled on anything. I started into a Barber quarter set, but just haven't been fully enthused by that series. I've also been tossing around the "consolidation" idea in which I would sell lots of low value coins to buy a high value coin. I still plan to do that in the future, but have been having a hard time finding a group of coins I'm willing to sacrifice.

In the meantime, I've been putting most of my efforts into my half eagle roll, which I enjoy quite a bit. It just occurred to me though, 8 of my 9 indian half eagles in the roll are a different date/mm combo(only 1 duplicate). Going through the series, I find that there are only 24 total, so technically, I'm 1/3 of the way there just from my gold hoarding efforts!

I've heard of folks collecting quarter eagle indians as a complete set, but have not heard of many half eagle indian collections. Now there are the 2 big guns, the 1929 and 1909-O. No those are real toughies, but is still somewhat comparative to a set of Barber quarters. I start thinking to myself, I LOVE incuse indians, why don't I go for a set! Even if I can't get the big 2, I should easily be able to get the rest.
I just don't totally understand why there isn't more of a market for these as a collection. I can't find any "indian half eagle" albums. I guess I could get one custom made. Also, I think I could get through most of it rather inexpensively too. I have 15 lib half eagles, so for every indian I add to my set, I can sell a lib so I'd just end up paying the difference. Any suggestions?

How about forming a type set of gold coins? You could sell the excess fives and still hold the gold. Personally, I don't like to look at those empty holes. IMHO, type sets are more interesting to non coin collectors, given their variety of size and design. Then too, a type se looks more like a serious collection and less like a hoard. Just my take ...

Thanks for the comments. I do have a pretty extensive gold type set for both no motto/motto all the way down to the classic head series. I do not have a pre 1834 gold coin yet, and that is on my list of potential big purchases down the road.

Selling all for a 1929 is an interesting idea. I'll have to contemplate that, though I think i'd go for a 1909-O first.

Wizard Coin Supply sells a Capital Holder for a complete set of Indian Half Eagles. I have seen a set in the white plastic holder that really looks amazing. They probably don't put out an album because it would only be one or two pages. I love Indian Half Eagles too and I would recommend keeping the coins that you have and simply make the 1929 your last purchase. I have 2 1909 D's in case you don't have one of those and would care to deal for one of mine when I am able to sell on this forum which should be in a week or two. I really believe that down the line these coins will be recognized for their beauty and unique minting qualities that they are famous for. In short, I don't see how you could go wrong putting together a set of these beautiful coins.I see that there is a 1909 O on ebay now for $11,995, so cash in that 401K before the government takes possession of it and buy something that will grow in value instead of the wobbly stock market which is way overdue for a massive correction.

I'm one for collecting for hobby and profit, but cashing a 401k is a big no no!

I'm just talking about timing. He wouldn't have to cash in the whole thing. Just redeem enough to make a solid purchase that would fulfill his desire to acquire a rare and valuable addition to his dream collection. There is no way that the markets have any real sound reason to be sitting at their current levels. People are in stocks for the dividend because you can't make a nickel with interest rates artificially suppressed while they print enough dollars to pinch ten percent out of everyone's savings by way of the inflation tax. You can recoupe the ten percent early withdrawal penalty within one or two months considering the rarity of a 1911-O Half Eagle and the likelihood that gold will be at $1600 by October 2011. There will be buyers if he needs to sell because I would be the first in line to take it off of his hands. I already own a 1911-O that I picked up a few years back and according to current listed prices I have averaged around 8% per year on that coin were I to sell it today, which I won't. I'm not suggesting closing out his 401K entirely, but even the experts say that you should have 5 to 10% Precious Metals in your retirement portfolio. I'm just saying to live a little while you're still here.
