Just got my Ryedale today and throughout the day was hitting up the local banks for pennies to run through it.

Unpacked, set it up and started unrolling pennies. Was fine for about 10 minutes then it started jamming like crazy!

Every time I unjammed it, a rusty looking corroded coin was jamming it up. I checked the next few rolls instead of mindlessly dumping it into the machine- OMG the corrosion damage!

Some were so bad that it actually ate holes in the penny itself! Some had corrosion buildup like they were barnacles growing on the pennies. Most of the affected pennies were so bad that I couldn't even get a date off most of them. I did get partials and the ones I could make out were....

2000-2009 years!

I seriously got a bad batch of rolls or something since there were about 10 rolls filled with these corroded pennies! Almost every other one in those rolls were corroded.

Jammed my poor machine about 15 times before we got through the stretch of bad pennies.

Have anyone seen this before? This is the first I've seen of pennies going bad, although like we all have, heard of the stories of how fast these things fall apart.

I feel bad for my Ryedale. Went through a hard first day. =(

First off, congrats on your Ryedale!

Second, I've never seen rolls full of corroded, dying coins yet.. I've seen one or two, but not a full roll.. Maybe they were fountain pennies..

That's Andy's take (from Ryedale) from his email this morning. I asked him on the proper procedure to clean off the corrosion "dust" it left behind.

Probably about a good 40 messed up coins of 4-5 rolls or so.

If you know anyone who metal detects, they will have a can or two filled with 'stinkin' lincolns'.

I once took about 30 in that shape and gave them a muriatic acid bath. They immediately started to fizz over, like a toxic head on a beer. The acid and zinc do not play well!

When you use Muriatic ( Hydrochloric) acid on zinc, the gas (fizz) released is hydrogen gas. Be sure to keep it away from a flame or electrical spark in a well ventilated area.

I went and got 5 rolls of pennies at one bank and the first 3 rolls were terrible. Corroded. I gave up searching the other two rolls.
